Here's a classic, super easy to play yidaki made from age seasoned timber sporting a BIG 6.25" bell at the bottom end! Ngongu Ganambarr (Dhuwal aboriginal) crafted this instrument from stringybark eucalyptus. He is the son of the elder clan leader for the Datiwuy mala (clan). Ngongu lives at the Dhalinybuy outstation in a very remote area of Australia's Northern Territory. His work is consistently excellent with natural bores, small natural mouthpieces and excellent playing qualities. He is a talented yidaki player, dancer, singer and hunter. And if you are new to the didgeridoo, Ngongu is very well established as one of the best yidaki crafters in the world. See the rotating close-up photos at left for a better look. This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo, "yidaki", here. A treasure for its sound, condition, well seasoned timber and provenance.

Acquired from the Walt Young collection, this yidaki was one of Walt's go-to instruments for live performances over many years, and can be heard on his album of "didgeridoo blues" music. Also, Walt custom made a thick, very protective travel cover for this instrument which will be included free of charge! This yidaki, circa 2006, is in very good condition. It shows very little wear, and nothing obvious or degrading of the value. It was traditionally crafted from termite hollowed stringybark eucalyptus in Australia's remote N.E. Arnhem Land. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. A clear finish protects the wood from the elements. The natural mouthpiece is very comfortable and will be sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil) before shipping to you. No beeswax is needed.

FREE SHIPPING in the U.S. which, for an instrument this size, would be around $50 to most places outside of California. That said, the box, bubbles, packing, insurance and delivery are on us!

Soundwise: Concert Quality

When played in the traditional hard tongue style this yidaki has the acoustics of a ceremonial instrument. Having said that, it easily responds to contemporary style without hesitation offering up a LOUD, GRUFF BEATINESS. Truly expressive whilst being very easy to play. Good bass frequencies. The slightly tapered bore and medium-thick walls deliver warmth, depth, and gravel-voiced distortion effects. Blunt diaphragmatic response with perfectly balanced acoustics.

It plays bang-on, smack between D# and E. Excellent for moderate to fast paced riddims, and for learning traditional Yolngu style playing. It takes pressure well and cranks out the "drrt drrt drrt dupa dupa drrt" rhythms with raw grit. Four easy horn toots! Optimal strong backpressure makes the circular breathing technique easy. This old beauty is loud and powerful. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Watch the video below to see Barry demo this didgeridoo for you.
