This instrument is old school, exceptional, and rare. Acquired from a private collection, it was originally purchased directly from Frank Thill at the 2003 Joshua Tree Didgeridoo Festival. Frank says it was one of his personal instruments but sold it to extend his U.S. stay. This yidaki is in excellent condition with no scratches or blemishes.
In the didgeridoo community at large only a few names have become synonymous with expertly crafted yidaki, and one of them (Frank) is not aboriginal. Frank worked with Djalu Gurruwiwi and his family for quite a while in Australia's NE Arnhem Land, learning traditional crafting techniques from the master himself. Upon moving to Darwin around 2001, Frank's reputation for making exceedingly fine yidaki had begun to swell around the world. With Djalu's blessing, Frank crafted some of the most highly sought-after instruments to be found. Then, in a matter of just a few years (following the birth of his daughter) Frank shifted gears, moved his family to South Australia, and pursued an entirely new career. So the number of instruments Frank made are quite limited as compared to those by crafters still working today. And that makes a fine yidaki by Frank Thill even more rare and desirable among players and collectors.
This BIG, GORGEOUS, BEEFY, FERAL, CONCERT QUALITY yidaki was crafted from well seasoned stringybark eucalyptus. It sports a BIG 5" bell on the bottom end, and at nearly 5 feet long and 10.4 pounds in weight this is not an instrument to take backpacking, rather, it's a showpiece that you'll admire and enjoying playing at home for many years. The conical bore is very clear which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. A satin finish protects the wood and artwork from the elements. The inside was originally treated with tung oil and has now age seasoned beautifully and without any cracks whatsoever.

This vintage instrument is more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo, "yidaki", here. A treasure for its sound, well seasoned timber and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Fitted with a comfortable mouthpiece made of organic beeswax, sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can be easily be adjusted to fit you perfectly, no worries.

Soundwise: Concert Quality
This yidaki snarls and growls with a ferocious intensity! Utterly ripper sound for a technical player that wants to shred the airwaves. Very strong backpressure with effortless horn toots with the forst and third toot both in G. You can get sassy tongued bleeps, loud vocal squalls, insectile buzzes and dirty pips of static. It's a fast, feral, firecracker of a yidaki. Awesome drum circle instrument due to the very high pitch that wails above the bass of the drums better than a low pitched didgeridoo. Optimal strong backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique easeful. This is an heirloom quality artifact and a highly collectible instrument. Excellent value for its sound quality, age-seasoned timber and provenance. Likely to sell quickly so please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like a demo over the phone.
