Concert Quality Mago from Australia
|
|
Mandilwurra Warray'ngu aka Ambrose Cameron

The red dot on the Australian map at left shows the region where this mago came from. Ambrose crafted
this classic mago style
didgeridoo circa 1997. Ambrose was a highly sought-after mago crafter. He passed away in 2005. Whilst living in the Maningrida
area of Australia's Northern
Territory, all of his mago
are decorated with nothing more
than his own handprints applied
in natural ochres (earth pigments).
Of special interest regarding this particular mago is that some of the white gypsum clay was placed in his mouth and spat onto the surface around his handprints (a traditional technique used more commonly in ceremonial body painting). This is only found on his earlier instruments, and before he started applying black handprints to his artwork.
This one is also larger and deeper in pitch than the few instruments by Ambrose that have surfaced on offer since his passing. A rare find indeed. It's an astonishing
player with a completely natural
termite-hollowed bore crafted
from yellowbox eucalyptus.
I should keep this one, true,
so take it away now before I
decide to do just that. The mouthpiece is the original one Ambrose put on it made of sugarbag beeswax. As always, we will sanitize the mouthpiece with Didgeri-Clean (made from tea tree and lavender oils). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted to fit you perfectly. Instructions included. There has never been any kind of finish (oils or polyurethane) on the inside or outside of this fine mago, and none are called for or recommended. |
Soundwise: Concert quality sound and playability with perfectly balanced tonal characteristics
and a great deal of clarity and
depth. This AWESOME sounding
mago offers up "high beam" acoustics
whilst being very easy and enjoyable
to play. Unbelievably responsive
to tongued riddims and trill with achingly gorgeous harmonic swells. The
completely natural bore and medium wall thickness make it highly reverberant,
and the clear, open bell end delivers vivid vocal effects,
chirpy highs, and GROUND SWELLING bass
frequencies! Three easy horn toots,
the first being warm against the
drone. Perfect backpressure for
its size and pitch make the circular
breathing technique very easeful.
A sensational addition to even the most
robust didgeridoo quiver, and a fair offer for its rarity, sound quality, provenance, and well seasoned timber.
