"Bonba Soaring"
Performance Quality Yidaki from Australia

Djakapurra Munyarryun

The red dot on the Australian map at left shows the region where this didgeridoo came from. A butterfly, or bonba, is painted in the middle of the yidaki right atop the natural wood grain. The painted band designs are Wangurri and very significant to his tribe. Djakapurra, son of Wangurri clan leader Bawurr, is one of the talented and hardworking Munyarryun brothers from Dhalinybuy. Among them are Bandamul, Gurraramawuy, Buwathay, Memawuy, Malalakpuy, and Mirrwatnga. Djakapurra distinguished himself at a young age as a yidaki player, earning the right to play in ceremony and also one of his names, Ganbulapula, relating to the story of the first Yirritja moiety yidaki. He has also distinguished himself as a dancer, performing with and acting as Yolngu consultant for Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australia's premier indigenous dance company. He was the featured Aboriginal performer at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. What a treat to own a yidaki crafted and painted by Djakapurra. This is an "old
school" instrument in excellent
condition, much more collectable
than your average didgeridoo,
and we honor that by using the
proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo,
"yidaki", here. Painted with natural ochres (earth pigments). The bell or distal end is
very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of
tone. Features a perfect natural mouthpiece that's been sanitized
with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). No beeswax needed. |

Soundwise: Performance quality sound. This deadly didgeridoo is sparky and
responsive to anything you throw
into it. The sharp, clear drone
is balanced with articulate vocal
effects and robust harmonic overtones.
Just a bit of gruff and grit in the low end, but overall fairly bright and round. Very easy to play, even for a true beginner, so you'll get the
best out of it straight away. This
is a truly wonderful player offering
heaps of tonal luminosity, whiz-bang
response to tongued rhythms, and bright, snappy horn toots. The overblown note is very stable so it's easy to incorporate into rhythms. Perfect backpressure
for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique
easeful. I reckon you can you tell how much I love this didge, and we don't presently have another like it of this size, deep red wood grain, and awesome sonics. Please don't hesitate to
ring us up if you want to hear it
or ask any questions. 100%
