Concert Quality Yidaki from Australia

Burrngupurrngu Wunungmurra

The red dot on the map of Australia at left shows you where this yidaki comes from. Burrngupurrngu (Dhalwangu aboriginal) is one of the foremost yidaki
makers and a senior lawman for
the Dhalwangu clan. Whilst
busy with ceremonial responsibilities
for months at a time, Burrngupurrngu
demands of himself a consistent
standard. He's well respected
amongst Yolngu communities for
his knowledge of yidaki making
and playing. Even as a young
man he was sought after to play
in ceremony. The
artwork represents
a Dhalwangu clan
designs that are very significant
to his tribe, and the execution
of the fine crosshatch lines
is remarkable. This is an "old
school" instrument in excellent
condition, much more collectable
than your average didgeridoo,
and we honor that by using the
proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo,
"yidaki", here. Painted with natural ochres (earth pigments). The bell or distal end is
very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of
tone. Features a perfect natural mouthpiece that's been sanitized
with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). Most definitely one of my favorite players from these new arrivals. |

Soundwise: Concert quality sound. Its thin walls make this one BASSY and REVERBERANT
for a yidaki in E, offering up a truly
meditative air about it. The well
seasoned timber and completely natural
bore deliver a lush, radiant tone
with perfectly balanced acoustics.
It generates brilliant yet warm vocal
clarity for awesome dingo howls, kookaburra
calls, and otherworldly echoes. Four
easy to hit horn tones, each warm
against the drone. Perfect backpressure
for its size and pitch making the circular breathing technique
easeful. It's one of my personal favorites
that we have on offer at the moment,
because it responds so perfectly to
the way I like to play didge – starting
soft and quite, mid tempo, then building
up to faster riddims with sharp vocal
attacks and gnarly distortion effects.
This is a seriously impressive yidaki... a
sonic marvel of collector's quality,
and a true blue showpiece
crafted from well seasoned timber.
