Concert Quality Mago from Australia

Norman Lane (Wugularr aboriginal)

The red dot on the Australian map at left shows the region where this didgeridoo came from. We refer to this instrument as a "mago" to honor its traditional construct, and because that's the name used in place of didgeridoo where it comes from in central Arnhem Land. Norman crafted and painted up this fierce mago featuring artwork that represents barramundi fish and water goannas. The fine cross-hatch lines, or rarrk, involve the traditional use of ochres and "jarlk" grass which is the secret to his perfectly straight lines found in his work. Crafted from termite hollowed eucalyptus circa 2002. It is in very fine condition and has been well cared for. The age of the timber has seasoned the wood beautifully. The interior bore is
very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of
tone. Fitted with its original sugarbag beeswax mouthpiece (this beeswax has the aroma of molasses and sweet tobacco) sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted to fit you perfectly. Instructions included. |
Soundwise: Concert quality sound. Warm and gruff–– a very traditional acoustic. Responds well to contemporary riddims, whilst built to be played in the Western Arnhem Land style (watch the end of the video below for a fine example of this style). The first trumpet toot is
very stable making it easy to incorporate into rhythms. This mago
responds quickly to the slightest pressure changes and offers up tongued riddims with ease. The vocals are warm and the
balance leans toward the mid range frequencies. It's loud without being ear-splitting but doesn't muk around when it comes to playing riddims that shred! Perfect backpressure
for its size and pitch (making the circular breathing technique
easier). Fine instruments of this ilk only come around every so often, so if you've been dreaming of owning a serious, well seasoned mago then take it away quickly or it'll be gone. Please don't hesitate
to contact us if you have any questions
or would like a demo over the phone.
