| Donald "Grind King" Cassel Back in the News |
May 22, 2007: Our didgeri-bro Donald Cassel is back in the news, and below there's a link to a recent article about him. The page includes a photo of Donald playing one of his favorite didgeridoos! Donald is a very enthusiastic didge player and collector, but he's world famous for creating the first "grindable" axles for skateboards (these axles are called "trucks"). |
| It's been almost 20 years since Donald created his Grind King business, and he still hand shapes each new truck. Donald grew up skating L.A. pools in the Dogtown era and he still operates out of Venice Beach where it all started. To read the article about Donald and see a photo of him playing an agave didgeridoo by Tyler Spencer, Click here. Good on 'ya, Donald! |

| Didgeridoo Sale & Ganga Giri Show/Workshop |
May 11, 2007: As many of you know, L.A.Outback is a home-based business located in the canyons above Studio City, CA. The huge brush fire in L.A.'s Griffith Park is still smoldering and we can both see and smell it from where we are. A bit too close for comfort as you can imagine. Having said that, no homes or businesses were destroyed thanks to some of the best firefighters in the world, so there's much to be thankful for. Now, we don't want to call it a fire sale, but... |
| We've just put some select didgeridoos on sale that you may want to check out. The sale ends May 25th so grab'm quick! |
| Also, Ganga Giri is back this year at the sensational Joshua Tree Music Festival, appearing Saturday, May 19th! And the following Monday he'll be conducting a serious workshop covering everything from circular breathing to advanced riddims and techniques. Even better, the workshop will be held at the Integratron (if you've never heard of this place, here's a link to their website: www.integratron.com. For all of the details about Ganga's workshop check out our Calendar Page. |

| Tyler Spencer to Play Didge at Aboriginal Art Exhibit |
| April 19 , 2007: One of our favorite didgeridoo players, Tyler Spencer, is making a special appearance at The Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. Tyler will
wow and inspire you with his virtuoso didgeridoo rhythms and humble
personality. He's performing on the opening night of "Dreaming in Color:
Aboriginal Art from Balgo". A breathtaking exhibition of Aboriginal
paintings from the community of Balgo, Australia, the traditional land of
the Kukatja, Ngarti, and Walmajarri peoples. Brilliant in color and
vibrant in pattern, the paintings reflect traditional Aboriginal tenets
relating to food, homeland, women's law, and Dreaming ceremonies. |
| The event is April 28 from 6 to 8 PM. Admission is $10 for non-museum
members. For more info visit our Calendar Page on our website: Click here. This event is highly recommended and we hope to see you there for what is
destined to be a wonderful evening of art and music. |

Episode on "Earl" Tomorrow Night |
April 18 , 2007: It's confirmed that the episode of "My Name is Earl" with the didgeridoo bits will air April 19 at 8 PM / 7 Central on NBC. For those of you not familiar with the show or the consulting that we did on this episode you can visit this page to find out more, and see photos I took on the set that day, Click here. |
| Don't expect to see very much or even hear the didgeridoo well, as these segments were shot as quick "jump cuts" for comedic effect. And please keep in mind that we were not consulted about the dubious "aboriginal" body paint worn by the actors. Still, it should be fun. |

| Didgeridoo
in Columbia Pictures "Walk Hard" |
| March
31, 2007: The propmaster for a new movie
titled "Walk Hard" rented two didgeridoos
from L.A.Outback yesterday for a scene they're shooting
next week. The film stars John C. Riley (Talladega Nights,
Chicago) and is being produced by the team that brought
us The 40 Year Old Virgin and Talladega Nights. This
new comedy spoofs other movies in much the same way
that Scary Movie did. Should be fun! I'll keep you updated
and try to get some pictures from the set. |

a few weeks ago when I acted as "didgeridoo consultant"
for an episode of NBC's "My Name is Earl"?
Well that episode hasn't aired yet so you didn't miss
it. Just keep your eyes peeled for the episode titled
"Two Balls, Two Strikes". TV Guide or the
NBC website are good places to check the listings. If
you haven't heard about this yet check out some photos
I took on the set that day Click here. |
| Another
kewl bit to share with you is a link to Bryan Beery's
website. Bryan bought an unpainted didgeridoo from us
a while back and did some really awesome artwork on
it (burned and painted). Doesn't hurt that Bryan is
already a well established artist with a very robust
website. Have a look at what a little inspiration can
do: http://www.bigtimeinternet.com/didge/ |

| Update:
"My Name is Earl" Episode with Didgeridoo |
| Feb.
27, 2007: Yesterday I acted as consultant
for the NBC show "My Name is Earl" starring
Jason Lee. I mentioned this in a previous DidgeriNews
email and now that it's been shot I can let you know
more, and share some photos I took on the set. All of
the exterior shots were done on a 20 acre multi million
dollar residential property in Thousand Oaks, California
(about 25 minutes from L.A. proper). Three actors were
painted and dressed up as "aboriginal" fellas,
one whom I taught to get a rhythm on the didgeridoo
with the other two keeping time by clicking boomerangs
and tap sticks. The show is currently scheduled to air
on Thursday, March 15, at 8:00 PM. |

Didgeridoo Guided Meditation, Sat., Feb. 24, 2007 |
| Feb.
18, 2007: L.A.Outback will host a group
"energy balancing meditation" facilitated
by Pablo Cunqueiro on Sat., February 24, from 3 to 4
PM. We've had so many people ask for this that it may
become a regular happening here, but this will be the
very first one. Pablo will play the didgeridoo, concentrating
on your seven chakras, with the harmonic sounds and
vibrations as a focus for 45 minuets of meditation. |
| $15
per person. Hot tea and water provided. Please bring
a yoga mat or pillow, or simply use one of our chairs
to relax in. No prior experience with any form of meditation
needed. Pablo is available for private sessions and
small groups, which you can discuss with him after the
meditation. For more info, including directions, please
see the listing for this date on our Calendar

Rev Up on "American Chopper" |
| Feb.
16, 2007: The cult TV series, "American
Chopper", which features the world-famous custom
motorbike-building family of Paul, Paulie, and Mikey
Teutul, started filming in Sydney yesterday. Three episodes
of the new series will be filmed in Australia, during
a two-week touring blitz that will take in some of the
country's iconic attractions. Millions will be introduced
to the delights of Australia from the back of a chopper
bike. And while the hosts are more used to handling
choppers, they will be introduced to whip cracking,
sheep shearing and playing the didgeridoo! |
| Russell
Crowe has already signed up to work with the stars,
who will spend time at his farm in Coffs Harbour as
they nut out their Australian-inspired bike design.
The show is the highest rating program on the Discovery
Channel and attracts more than 300 million viewers in
160 countries. The cast and crew have made their way
north today to the Great Barrier Reef to film another
segment. During their tour they will also take in a
cane toad race in Airlie Beach, a sunrise Harley motorcycle
tour of Uluru and a visit to King's Creek Station near
Alice Springs. |

Episode on NBC's "My Name is Earl" |
| Feb.
14, 2007: The Fox/NBC television show
"My Name is Earl" dropped by L.A.Outback today
and rented 4 eucalyptus didgeridoos for an episode filming
next week. While I've never seen the program, which
stars Jason Lee, the premise sounds fun and poignant...
Earl is a hapless crook that has an epiphany after winning
the lottery and sets out to right the wrongs he's done
over the years. Very karmic. In this episode Earl is
daydreaming and finds himself in the Australian outback
where a fella is playing the didgeridoo. Somehow other
didges fit into the rest of the segment as well. They're
flying an aboriginal dance troupe in to create a realistic
scenario, and Mark and I will be on set to act as consultants
as well. When the episode has a title we'll let you
know so you can look for it in the TV listings. |

the Light of the Didgeridoo |
| Feb.
14, 2007: If any of you have eaten at
a new or remodeled Outback Steakhouse lately you may
have noticed the new light fixtures above the tables...
Yes, they are didgeridoos! The company that's making
these for Outback Steakhouse has already bought over
400 of our "modern" didgeridoos to make these
light fixtures, and they say there's no end in sight
because the restaurant chain is growing in leaps and
bounds. The fact that all of our modern didges are hand
crafted into the same size and shape made them ideal
for the project. It's something that they never could
have done with eucalyptus didges especially with heat,
wiring, and durability issues. So check out a new or
remodeled Outback Steakhouse and dine by the light of
a didgeridoo! |

On Wheels and Ondrej MP3 |
| January
28, 2007: One of our regular customers
is Donald the "Grind King", who is very well
known in the skateboarding world, and also a very good
didge player. Donald rocked up this afternoon and nabbed
two choice didges (thanks again, Donald) and he let
us know about a spot on Fuel TV coming up on Feb. 4
where he and one of the skater kids he sponsors will
be playing the didgeridoo. Fuel TV is the cable channel
that's all about surfing, skating, and extreme sports.
The spot is about Hanna, a 14 year old skateboarder,
and you'll see Donald teaching her how to play the didge.
Check it out! |
| Also...
I've mixed an MP3 sound file for Ondrej Smekal's new
CD "Didgeridoo Solo 2". With so many awesome
and bizarre tracks to pick from it was quite a challenge
to choose what to showcase, but the mix features bits
from six different tracks to give you the vibe of it.
This is currently our newest and best selling CD, so
check it out and have a listen to the mix! Click

| David
Hudson Appears in Marlon Brando Biography on TCM |
| January
25, 2007: Legendary actor Marlon Brando
will appear with his face painted in ceremonial Aboriginal
designs, as well as playing the didgeridoo, in a biography
about his life and career on the Turner Classic Movie
channel in April. How did this come to pass? Well, David
Hudson (famous Aboriginal didgeridoo player and also
an actor) worked with Marlon on the film "The Island
of Dr. Moroe", and the two fellas hit it off between
takes on set. Apparently Marlon had heaps of interest
in world cultures and collects indigenous artefacts.
So while making the film, which was shot in Australia,
Marlon had David make him a didgeridoo and paint up
his face which was all captured in "behind the
scenes" footage. The editor of the biography stopped
by L.A.Outback to pick up a didgeridoo and some boomerangs
to gift the director with, and that's how we found out
about it. So watch the Turner Classic Movie channel
listings in April for the biography on Marlon Brando
and check it out. |

| Launch
of DidgeriNews from L.A.Outback |
| January
24, 2007: It's Barry from L.A.Outback
here to announce our NEW newsletter format which we
hope you'll enjoy. This format falls back to a true
"grassroots-style" information service in
plain text. I know, we like fancy newsletters, too,
but there's only enough time to do those once a month,
and a lot of the info has aged by the time you read
it. With this new format we will be sending you info
on one or more topics as they arise. No more waiting
for the monthly newsletter! For example, if we find
out about an upcoming didgeridoo performer on a TV show
you'll hear about it that day, not read about it in
the next "issue" of the newsletter. Sometimes
you may get more than one email from us in a single
day, sometimes you may not get one for a whole week.
That's the way news works, and it's all about keeping
you informed in the instant. Please try this out for
a month or so and then let us know what you think about
it! Here, your opinion actually has the power to change.
We want this to be a great tool to keep you in the know
about didgeridoo and related news and events, as well
as what's happening here at L.A.Outback. |
| Cheers, |
Barry,
Mark, Pablo, Jorge, and Dingo |
