Old Mago from south western Arnhem Land

These are all fine examples of traditional mago from south western Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern Territory. All are made from locally gathered yellowbox eucalyptus. The crafting and artwork are old school and very collectable. No electric powered or specially crafted tools were used. The figures painted on all of these are Yawk Yawk and/and or Mimi spirits. Every mago is painted entirely in natural earth ochres by "text book" aboriginal artists. There men are painters of high degree in their community, and being so, they are allowed to paint very thin rarrk (cross hatch lines). Instruments like these are becoming more and more rare every year.
