Lewis Burns and Ray Hampton visit LA Outback

Ray, Barry and Lewis at LA Outback

Thank you, Lewis Burns and Ray Hampton, for a wonderful time both in our shop and at this years Joshua Tree Didgeridoo Festival. It was a pleasure to see Lewis again and to curate his first US art opening here at LA Outback. Lewis was in high spirits and rare form despite the fact that he had a fever the first few days around.

Lewis brought his friend Ray Hampton along, who is a fine Aboriginal dancer and a helluva nice guy. Ray taught classes on Aboriginal dance, tools and weapons both here in Laguna Beach and at the Joshua Tree Didgeridoo Festival. They were very well attended and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Lewis and Ray are descendants of Aboriginal people from the area around Dubbo in New South Wales, Australia. They are both discovering and rekindling their indigenous heritage. Lewis owns and operates his own gallery in Dubbo, called the Red Earth Gallery. We've been doing business with Lewis for years, buying his hand crafted and burned/painted didgeridoos. We especially appreciate that his didgeridoos are crafted without the use of power tools (something rarely found these days).

We also wish to thank the Australia Council for the Arts for their support.

Lewis did a wonderful mural of his stylish and colorful Aboriginal art motifs on the sidewalk in front of our shop. The painting depicts three dolphins and a rainbow serpent, a platypus, kangaroo and emu, as well as handprints from the whole gang here at LA Outback. You can see much of the finished mural in the photo at the bottom right of this page. The mural is permanent and you may see it for yourself the next time you visit!

Lewis painted, Ray danced and a young boy got an eye 'n ear full of Aboriginal culture at Lewis' art opening.

The night lit up as Lewis and Ray drew an even larger crowd while performing outside of our shop. Ray explained the dances to us before each set, while Lewis played the didgeridoo and clapsticks.
