 Aboriginal works from Central Desert

Aboriginal dot paintings are traditionally from the central desert region of Australia and are primarily painted by women in the communities. The designs found in dot art paintings represent dreaming stories that would have been done as temporary art pieces created in the sand.

Both ochre and acrylics are used in aboriginal dot paintings, though acrylic tends to be the most popular in commercially created art. The artists will take very small brushes or sticks to create their dots dipping the implement into the paint before applying each dot to the canvas. The dots can be very finely precise or wildly different in size and shape. It may be easy to look at some of the works with less precise dot work as being immature in their technique, but nothing could be further than the truth.
