This is a rare opportunity to own a DEADLY SOUNDING mago by the old master crafter George Djunggunwanga (often spelled Jungawanga). Also known as Left-hand George because he throws spears with his left hand, he was one of the seminal figures of mago making in Arnhem Land during the 70s and 80s alongside the late David Blanasi and master yidaki crafter Djalu Gurruwiwi. Now in his 70s George no longer makes mago, and when they become available they are quickly taken up by collectors from around the world.

Acquired from a private collection (circa 1995) this mago was sold to its last owner by famous didgeridoo player Stephen Kent. The artwork features a barramundi fish motif rendered in natural ochres (earth pigments) sealed in a clear finish. It is in very good condition aesthetically with some wear here and there that is excusable considering its age. That said, I love the patina that time has given it. Best of all is the awesome sound it delivers. It floored me the first go I had on it! If the artwork on this mago was in excellent condition it would go quickly at nearly double the price we're asking. So if looks are less important to you than sound quality then don't hesitate because this one is likely to find a home quickly.

This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper regional word for this style didgeridoo, "mago", here. Highly collectable for its sound, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. The mouthpiece is fitted with black organic beeswax and sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted if needed to fit you perfectly. Instructions included, no worries.

Soundwise: Concert Quality
The instrument has a STUNNINGLY RESONANT tone and responds exceedingly well to the Gunborrk style. With its warm, slightly dirty acoustics you get heaps of reverberating tonal tonic to discover, from guttural wails to echoey trills that churn like electric cicadas. Dense harmonic swells. Amazing responsiveness to perky tongue-drumming and diaphragmatic bursts. Clear animal calls and tribal chatter. Three easy horn toots, the first being warm against the drone. Nearly effortless tup on the first overtone. Optimal strong backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique very easeful, especially for a big bore instrument.
