"Yirrkawuy"
Performance Quality Vintage Yidaki
Crafted by Napurrawuy WunungmurraWatch a VIDEO demo of this didgeridoo below!

Here's a classic, super easy to play yidaki with a handsome, well worn patina from its age seasoned wood. This fine yidaki was collected by Ben Hicks in 2006 while he was in Yirrkala, NE Arnhem Land, Australia. It has been held in his private collection since that time. Napurrawuy (pictured at right) makes yidaki working with only a machete as he lacks
proper tools. As such, he is forced to find the perfect trees to begin
with, and has succeeded in making some fantastic instruments, like this one! The
artwork was done in natural ochres (earth pigments) representing clan
designs that are very significant to his clan.
It's in very good condition with no signs of cracking or any repair work
ever done to it. Napurrawuy's father was the Gurrumuru leader Nyikamula. His mother is Balatj Mununggurr, and he lives on her land at Wandawuy. He is the younger brother of Datjirri #2 Wunungmurra, a young man groomed for influence whose artistic career has inspired this artist to follow in his footsteps.
This is an "old school" instrument in excellent condition, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo, "yidaki", here. The interior bore is very clear and open which
increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Features a natural mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). No beeswax needed. Soundwise: Performance Quality
Fast and gruff with a very traditional acoustic. Built to be played in the NE Arnhem Land "hard tongue" style. The bore is completely natural. The first trumpet toot is very stable making it easy to incorporate into rhythms. This yidaki responds quickly to the slightest pressure changes and offers up tongued riddims with ease. The vocals are warm and the balance leans toward the mid range frequencies, and when I first checked on the tuner I was shocked that it was between D and D# because it sounds deeper than that. Blunt diaphragmatic response with well balanced acoustics. It has strong backpressure making the circular breathing technique very easeful. We suspect that it's not gonna last long around here to be sure. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Watch
