"Red Earth Mantra"
Concert Quality Vintage Mago
Don Weluk (Gamarrang aboriginal)Watch a VIDEO demo of this didgeridoo below!

This RARE and COLLECTABLE instrument by Don Weluk, circa 2008, was just acquired from the Ben Hicks collection. We haven't seen one like this in many years. It has been well cared for and shows good stability of the timber. This particular instrument showcases a shift in Don's work as he moved from making "old school" mago to more contemporary works of art on canvas. The bottom section of this instrument depicts a rain and water lily motif on an elongated scale with good use of negative space. This is reflected in his award-winning paintings on canvas that now hang in museums, galleries, and private homes around the world. The asking price on this mago is more than reasonable for an instrument of this ilk. Don is Gamarrang aboriginal from Australia's Northern Territory. He painted the top section of this rugged mago using the traditional technique of placing gypsum clay in his mouth, then spraying it onto the mago. You hardly ever see this done anymore except in ceremonial body paint. The painting represents dharpa burra, the scrubby country of his homeland. Sourced by Ben Hicks at Maningrida, N.T., Australia in 2008. This mago was crafted from termite hollowed yellow box eucalyptus. I've considered keeping this one in the L.A.Outback collection, but for now it's on offer. There is no finish on this old mago so it has a wonderful patina. Instruments like these are getting harder to find, only surfacing when a collector decides to let one find a new home. The artwork was done in natural ochres (earth pigments) representing clan designs that are very significant to the community where it came from. The interior bore is completely natural and very clear which
increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Fitted with an organic beeswax mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). Soundwise: Concert Quality
When played in the traditional Western Arnhem Land style this mago has the acoustics ripe for ceremonial use. Having said that, it easily responds to contemporary style without hesitation offering up a loud, gruff beatiness. Truly expressive whilst being very easy to play. Good bass frequencies. The slightly tapered bore and medium-thick walls deliver warmth, depth, and gravel-voiced distortion effects. Blunt diaphragmatic response with well balanced acoustics. And when I first checked on the tuner I was shocked that it was in D# because it sounds deeper than that. It has strong backpressure making the circular breathing technique very easeful.
