Performance Quality Vintage Yidaki Painted by Dhangal Gurruwiwi W at ch a VIDEO demo of this didgeridoo below! T his yidaki was originally acquired from the Guan Lim collection in 1998. Whilst the crafter of this instrument is unknown, Guan had Dhangal (pictured at left) paint it up. She is the sister of famed yidaki master Djalu Gurruwiwi. The artwork features exceptional cross-hatch lines which are done
with a brush made from grass fibers, painted in the
north east Arnhem Land st yle with totemic symbols for ceremonial body paint designs. Dhangal is paid handsomely for her artwork which is why she does such a great job, and why you pay a bit more for it. What a beauty it is both in looks and sound. Older instruments of excellent provenance like this one are highly sought after. This yidaki was crafted from naturally termite hollowed eucalyptus in Australia's Northern Territory, the traditional homeland of the didgeridoo, and where it is still used in both sacred and public ceremonies today. This "old school" instrument is in excellent condition, and highly collectable for its sound, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Features a natural mouthpiece. No beeswax required. Soundwise: Performance Quality Otherworldly riddims create a sonic wind shear through this BRILLIANT yidaki. With its warm, slightly dirty acoustics you get heaps of reverberating tonal tonic to discover, from
guttural wails to echoey trills that churn like electric cicadas. Dense harmonic swells. Amazing responsiveness to perky tongue-drumming. Clear animal calls and tribal chatter. It can be a fast riddim stick whilst offering a sweet tone to disappear in. Three easy horn toots, the first being warm against the drone. Nearly effortless tup on the first overtone making it well suited for traditional hard tongue riddims. Optimal strong backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique very easeful.
