This very fine CONCERT QUALITY yidaki by Tony Wilfred Warrgelark of Walker River, NT, Australia has just arrived. Acquired from a superb private collection, this instrument was originally bought directly from the art center in Maningrida in 1995. It's in excellent condition with very little wear, and all of the natural ochres are completely intact with no smearing or discoloration at all. It looks as if it were painted last week! Pictured at right is Randin Graves playing his own yidaki by Warrgelark which he tells me was the very first eucalyptus instrument he ever bought, and also says it's been his main performing and recording stick. Randin is a world famous didgeridoo player, music composer, Fullbright scholar, and he has worked as a manager at Buku Larrngay Mulka art center in Yirrkala, NT, Australia.

Randin Graves Tony Wilfred Warrgelarkplaying traditional hard tongue riddims, but this one lends itself well to contemporary riddims as well! The original sugarbag beeswax mouthpiece is intact and remains comfortable after all these years. The mouthpiece end features an axe-honed "bottle neck" which acts as a handle to keep the yidaki from slipping while you play, something rarely seen in contemporary yidaki. It is wonderfully and expertly painted in both natural ochres (earth pigments) and acrylics with icons that represent garma (brackish water country). See the close-up photo at left and click on the thumbnails above for a better look.

This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo, "yidaki", here. A treasure for its sound, excellent condition, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Features its original mouthpiece which will be sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil) before shipping.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This is a HIGHLY RESONANT yidaki by Tony Wilfred Warrgelark with all of the hallmarks of the finest instruments from days gone by. It delivers a somewhat bright yet cavernous acoustic with clear vocal response and a vibrational undercurrent that makes me think of thunder off in the distance. Rich harmonics, three easy horn toots with the first interval being low in pitch and providing a nearly effortless "tup". Optimal strong backpressure for different styles of play –– fast or slow, and for ease of the circular breathing technique. The mouthpiece is hand chiseled and almost perfectly round about its base.

This is an heirloom quality artifact and a highly collectable instrument. Excellent value for its sound quality, age-seasoned timber, and provenance.
