This is a rare opportunity to own an original axe-honed, ochre painted, CONCERT QUALITY mago by the old master crafter George Djunggunwanga (often spelled Jungawanga). Also known as Left-hand George because he throws George Djunggunwanga magospears with his left hand, he was one of the seminal figures of mago making in Arnhem Land during the 70s and 80s alongside the late David Blanasi and master yidaki crafter Djalu Gurruwiwi. Now in his 70s, George (pictured at right) no longer makes mago, and when they become available they are quickly taken up by collectors from around the world.

Acquired from a private collection (circa 1986) this mago was made to play traditional Gunborrk or WAL (Western Arnhem Land) rhythms. The artwork features water lily totems rendered in natural ochres (earth pigments). It is in fine condition with only a bit of wear. There are no patches, repairs or cracks on it anywhere. Most excellent sound quality. This old mago is likely to find a home quickly.

Originally sourced directly from the remote art center at Maningrida in Australia's Northern Territory, this is an "old school" instrument that's much more collectable than your average didgeridoo. We honor that by using the proper regional word for this style of instrument, "mago", here. Prized for its sound, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. The mouthpiece is fitted with organic beeswax and will be sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil) before shipping. The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted if needed to fit you perfectly. Instructions included, no worries.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This rare and wonderful instrument delivers a DIRECT, COMPLEX DRONE with a dense, otherworldly acoustic. Responds exceedingly well to the Gunborrk or WAL style. The deep, dark tonality recalls the rumble of distant thunder with submerged harmonic swells. Amazing responsiveness to perky tongue-drumming and diaphragmatic bursts. Clear animal calls and tribal chatter. Three easy horn toots, the first being warm against the drone. Nearly effortless tup on the first overtone. Optimal strong-medium backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique very easeful, especially for a somewhat big bore instrument.

This instrument is bound to uptick in value in the coming years, especially as a huge segment of the U.S. population is becoming aware of finer quality didgeridoos and want their own connection to appreciate and preserve a shrinking supply of authentic vintage instruments. It's unknown how many more instruments like this one will appear for sale over the coming years, but it's safe to say that there won't be very many. Fine instruments of this ilk only come around every so often, so if you've been dreaming of owning a serious, well seasoned didgeridoo then take it away quickly or it'll be gone. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Read our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Includes Certificate of Authenticity, care guide and playing guide.
