Jack Nawilill (pictured below right) was born on the Maningrida community in N. Arnhem Land in 1945. An elder from the Rembarrnga language group, he is the senior song man for the White Cockatoo/Manngalinj (Bush Potato or Yam) Corroboree. Jack's detailed knowledge of the corroboree songs, coJack Nawilill magombined with his skill in the rhythmic use of voice and clap sticks, distinguishes him as one of Arnhem Land's outstanding elder musicians. As well as looking after his family and carrying out his many ceremonial responsibilities in his homeland, Jack is constantly instructing younger members of the company. Through his teachings a new generation of master performers are coming into being. Jack's detailed knowledge of corroboree songs and dreaming stories make him one of Australia's national living treasures.

Acquired from the private collection of Ben Hicks (circa 2008) this beefy mago is in very good condition with a BOOMY, evocative, hauntingly gruff drone. This mago is from Ben's personal collection and has not been on offer until now. There are no signs of patches or repair work ever done.

The artwork is rendered in both natural ochres (earth pigments) and acrylic paint. Crafted from termite hollowed yellow box eucalyptus. This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the regional word for didgeridoo, "mago", here. Highly collectable for its sound, artwork, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Features a mouthpiece made from organic beeswax, sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted by you for a perfect fit. Instructions included, no worries.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This old mago is a large instrument with a slightly gruff, invitingly warm tonality. It's in the versatile key of D. A solid instrument with dirty acoustics for the player interested in a raw, grittly textured sound rather than one with bright and shiny edges. This instrument has a tapered bore throughout and offers consistent compression which produces a smooth drone with good overall clarity. When played contemporary style it generates articulate vocal response for far-off dingo howls, kookaburra calls, and otherworldly echoes. It has medium-strong backpressure which is normal for a beefy didge, but the trade off is in the PHAT BASS and CAVERNOUS VOCALS you can get out of it. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Watch the video below to see Ben Hicks demo this mago for you. Read our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.
