Hand selected by Jeremy Cloake, this very fine CONCERT QUALITY yidaki by Djalu Gurruwiwi has just arrived here at L.A.Outback from Yirrkala in Australia's N.E. Arnhem Land region. It comes with the original tag issued by Buku-Larrngay Mulka art center where this instrument's documentation is archived. Djalu GurruwiwiDjalu (pictured at right) made this handsome yidaki which features a natural mouthpiece and a 3.75" bell at the bottom end. Painted by Djalu himself (harder to find these days) with Gälpu clan designs that are very significant to his tribe. See the close-up photo at left for a better look.

To the worldwide community of didgeridoo players, collectors and enthusiasts, Djalu Gurruwiwi (pictured at right) needs no introduction. Renowned as the best craftsman, his yidaki are revered for their exceptional qualities. For years he has had many visitors coming to Arnhem Land to learn from him privately, and he has also led the yidaki Master Class at the Garma Festival each year. He has traveled to Germany, the USA, the Middle East and Asia to provide yidaki demonstrations and tuition.

Djalu is also distinguished from other yidaki makers as he is also a painter whose works on sheets of bark are held in major museums and collections in Australia and around the world. Djalu talks about his father having a yidaki with him at all times. When out turtle hunting in a dug-out canoe, Djalu recalls his father signaling the capture of a turtle by blowing horn tones on the yidaki to the rest of the family on the beach who would then prepare a big fire oven. Djalu often says how he blows his spirit into each instrument he makes, and sends it out around the world to spread the power of the yidaki.

Amongst his own people Djalu maintains his prominence as a yidaki master, talented artist, ceremonial leader and senior lawman for the Gälpu. This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo, "yidaki", here. A treasure for its sound, size, condition, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Features a natural mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). No beeswax is needed.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This exceptional instrument just arrived from Australia. It's one of the top 5 instruments that we currently have on offer. It delivers incredible ease of rhythmic control and manipulation. Pitched in D with smoldering, serpentine drone waves, Space Invader bleeps, and thumping bass. This handsome, conical bore yidaki is quite LOUD and POWERFUL! Vocal response is excellent in the mid to upper frequencies giving your animal sounds and distortion effects very good articulation with warm notes. Excellent sensitivity to both tongued and diaphragmatic rhythms. Three easy horn toots, one warm and two bright against the drone. Excellent transition between drone and horn toots with heaps of punch. Perfect for playing traditional hard tongue riddims, but I find that it responds very well to contemporary styles as well. Optimal strong backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique easeful. The natural mouthpiece is hand chiseled to an imperfectly round shape which is a good thing –– allowing the player to easily find their own embouchure (lip fit) by turning the instrument just a bit clockwise or counter-clockwise until it feels just right.

This is an heirloom quality artifact and a highly collectable instrument. Excellent value for its sound quality, age-seasoned timber, and provenance.
