This RARE and COLLECTABLE mago by Crusoe Kurddal, circa 1998, was just acquired from a private collection. It is a full bore WAL (western Arnhem Land) style instrument made from bloodwood eucalyptus. This is only the second mago by Crusoe that we've ever had on offer. It Crusoe Kurddalhas been well cared for and shows no sign of damage, repair, or instability of the timber. The asking price on this one is more than reasonable for an instrument of this ilk and provenance. This is the kind of old mago that you may find on offer elsewhere for twice my asking price.

Born in 1961, Crusoe (pictured at right) is a Kuninjku man celebrated for his singing, dancing and artistic skills. He's not a prolific maker or painter of mago, and I've personally only been aware of a few that surfaced whilst he was a member of the White Cockatoo performing group in the late 90s. Crusoe stayed at my home in 1999 along with the other members of the group: David Balansi, Tom Kelly, David Gulpillil, Jackie Nawillil, Norman Lane and Solomon Weston. To help fund their U.S. trip I commissioned the fellas to paint some very fine blank didgeridoos. The painting on this mago is similar to the one Crusoe painted for me around the same time. The mago on offer here, however, is exquisitely painted in natural ochres (earth pigments) with fine crosshatch lines drawn with a string or blade of grass.

I'm considering keeping this mago in the L.A.Outback collection, but it's on the market for now. Grab it soon, before I change my mind, and it's yours. Truly old school, and instruments like these are getting harder to find, only surfacing once a collector decides to let one find a new home. The bore is very clear which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Fitted with an organic beeswax mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted to fit you perfectly. Instructions included, no worries.

Crusoe Kurddal
is also an accomplished actor, having played the lead role in Ten Canoes and featured in the movie Australia. He has a new film being released in 2013 called The Sleeping Warrior. When he's not starring in films, Crusoe maintains a sculptural practice that was invented by his father, the famed Kuninjku singer and artist Crusoe Kuningbal, who was broadly recognized as a virtuoso of songs and dances associated with the Mimih spirits, and he developed a technique of representing these spirits in sculptural form for use in the Kuninjku ceremony known as Mamurrng.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This collectable mago was built for the WAL (western Arnhem Land) style of playing. The wood is dense and the bore is full and open. This mago is quite LOUD yet manageable with a sonic presence that's hot but also sweet. Dense, shape-shifting harmonic flame and tone colors that create unique sonic travelogues through mind and place. Excellent midrange acoustics for crisp tongued pops, tups and spicy tongued twang. Vocal response is very good. It has three easy horn toots and optimal strong backpressure which makes the circular breathing technique easeful. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or would like a demo over the phone. This is a handsome showcase mago and it may not last long around here. Call straight away if you see your name on it. Watch the video below to see Barry demo this mago for you.
