Billy is from the Manyallaluk aboriginal community near Katherine in Australia's western Arnhem Land region. Years ago we were able to find instruments by Billy on a regular basis. But today, with Billy in his 70s he no longer makes or paints didgeridoos. This is only the third mago by Billy that we've had on offer in more than 6 years. Very rare indeed. Acquired from the private collection of David Betz (circa 1996) this mago is in very good condition. David owned and operated the Songlines aboriginal art gallery in San Francisco for many years. He is arguably one of the most knowledgeable people in the U.S. when it comes to traditional Australian aboriginal art and artifacts. This mago is from his personal collection and has never been on offer... until now.

The artwork is rendered in natural ochres (earth pigments) featuring a perentie lizard and python motif. Crafted from termite hollowed yellow box eucalyptus. This is an "old school" instrument, much more collectable than your average didgeridoo, and we honor that by using the regional word for didgeridoo, "mago", here. On offer at a very fair price for such a unique find by one of the masters from back in the day. Highly collectable for its sound, artwork, well seasoned timber, and provenance. The interior bore is very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of tone. Fitted with an organic black beeswax mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). The mouthpiece can easily be adjusted to fit you perfectly. Instructions included, no worries.

Soundwise: Concert Quality

This handsome old mago delivers a radiant warmth that's gonna blow you away! This is a wonderfully expressive instrument with a deep, lush, TRADITIONAL acoustic whilst being very easy to play. Grittily textured soundwaves abound where slow, smoky grooves are invigorated by poppy tongued percussive accents and blunt diaphragmatic response. Incredibly rich harmonic overtones. Gravel-voiced distortion effects. Very sensitive and responsive to the slightest tweaks of the tongue, diaphragm, and voice. Playful yet hauntingly inspirational. Concert quality means that it has superior, perfectly balanced acoustics. It offers a WARM and EVOCATIVE TONE to disappear in. Three easy horn toots, the first being warm against the drone. Optimal strong backpressure for its size and pitch make the circular breathing technique very easeful. I love this old mago and I should keep this one for myself, so don't hold off if you want it or I may unlist it soon (not to tease you, but because I'm a collector, too). Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Read our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

Includes Certificate of Authenticity, care guide and playing guide.
